Makry Gialos in Crete
Makry Gialos is one of the most beautiful villages in Crete and was named after the the long beach of the village. It is situated in Lassithi, the southeastern part of the island, very close to Sitia and Ierapetra. The village had remained uninhabited for many years since its inhabitants were forced to move to the mountain villages to escape the frequent attacks by pirates. During the last years, the village is home to many permanent inhabitants and undoubtedly one of the most famous holiday destinations in Crete. Makry Gialos is an ideal place not only for families and couples but also friends since it gracefully combines the tranquility and serenity of the place with the entertainment and various night options. At a very close distance from the Cybele apartments, you will find the Kalamokania beach where you can enjoy a tranquil swim, your coffee or just an exquisite meal under the tamarisks. A bit further away, you will find the sandy yet shallow beach of Makry Gialos, an ideal pick for families with children and for all watersports enthusiasts, since it is near the various training and equipment rental centers. This part of Makry Gialos is the most central spot of the village, which also offers a variety of restaurants, cafes and bars, literally on the beach.
Sightseeing
The Minoan Villa was discovered in Plakakia in Makry Gialos together with a seal ship -both of which are an important discovery since it proves the existence of sacred ships in the Minoan civilization as well. The Minoan mansion is just a few meters away from the center of the village.
The Roman Villa is situated in Katovigli, right next to the port of the village and comprises of different rooms, a water tank, various marble slabs and a tomb.
The Moni Kapsa monastery is situated in the eastern part of the village for more than 6 centuries and has been restorated by Saint Joseph Gerodogiannis. The monastery has also served as an important center of resistance during the occupation of Greece in the First World War.
Moni Toplou monastery is one of the most important monasteries in Crete and is situated just 10 km away from Sitia. In the monastery, you will find lots of old Christian icons, some of them being more than 5 or 6 centuries old, as well as Gospels, crosses and many others. Do not forget to try the biological products produced in the monastery such as the wine, the oil and the famous raki (Cretan alcoholic beverage).
Vai Palm forest in Crete is 24 km away from Sitia and is one of the most beautiful locations of the island of Crete far from being the biggest palm forest in Europe. Right in front of the forest, you will find an amazing blue flag sandy beach which is organized with umbrellas and sunbeds.
Koufonisi is an islet of amazing beauty with exquisite beaches which is at a small distance from Makry Gialos. There are daily boat connections to Koufonisi from the port of our village.
While exploring the wider area of Makry Gialos and Lassithi, you can choose from a variety of things to do like visiting one of the many beaches of the Libyan Sea which stretch out from Ferma to Gudura or visit the mountainous inland. Pefki, Agios Stefanos and Orino are an amazing opportunity for you to explore the traditional way of living in the villages.
